Message from Dan Parker, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party

Message from Dan Parker, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party

Last night, Governor Mitch Daniels gave his annual State of the State address. We all join the governor and the leadership of the General Assembly in applauding the hard work of our legislators in this short session. The long hours have already resulted in great progress, and the coming weeks are sure to produce more of the same.

Unfortunately, while Governor Daniels always seems to show up when credit is being handed out, he's nowhere to be found when the discussion turns to the problems facing his administration and our state.

In many ways, last night's speech was more remarkable for what we didn't hear than what was actually said.

Although he spoke for nearly a half-hour, Governor Daniels failed to touch on some of the most critical issues confronting Hoosier families every day. While Democrats in the House and Senate have continued their efforts to save and create Hoosier jobs at every opportunity, Mitch Daniels yet again failed to outline a jobs plan that amounts to more than the status quo.

Hardworking families all across this state are hurting, and it is long past time that Governor Daniels joined the Democratic leadership in searching for ways to immediately jump-start Indiana's economy.

Instead of saying how bad things could be, Hoosiers deserve to hear how good things will be.

Hoosiers also deserved to hear about the future of our embattled Family and Social Services Administration in the aftermath of Daniels' privatization scheme's failure, the future of our state budget in the absence of federal stimulus money, and the future of public education during this fiscal crisis.

In short, Hoosiers deserved less back-patting and more problem-solving, and Governor Daniels didn't deliver.

Join Clerk White for 'First Tuesdays'

Voter education and outreach effort aimed at increasing participation in local elections

INDIANAPOLIS - Marion County Clerk Beth White announced today that she is hosting 'First Tuesday' events in 2010 in an effort to make the democratic process more accessible and inclusive.

"The goal of each 'First Tuesday' is to encourage residents to play a more active role in our democracy, whether it's running for office, registering to vote for the first time or serving as a poll worker," Clerk White said.

Clerk White will lead 'First Tuesday' meetings, focusing on one topic each month. Besides learning about elections, residents can register to vote and ask questions of Clerk White and her staff. Meetings will be held on the 'First Tuesday' of each month - a nod to Election Day, which is held in Indiana on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May and November.

The first three 'First Tuesday' dates and topics are outlined below:

Date                Time               Topic                                                   Location
Feb. 2, 2010    6-7 p.m.           Filing for local office

Warren Township Gov't Center

501 N. Post Rd.

Mar. 2, 2010    6-7 p.m.           Filing campaign finance reports         IBEW, Local 481

1828 N. Meridian St.

Apr. 6, 2010    6-7 p.m                     Becoming a poll worker

Washington Township Gov't Center
5302 N. Keystone Ave.

In addition to 'First Tuesdays,' Clerk White launched yVote! in the fall of 2008, giving high school students a hands-on demonstration of the county's voting equipment and encouraging them to be civically engaged in their community. Through this program, she has registered more than 500 eligible high school students. Clerk White and her staff also regularly attend naturalization ceremonies to register Indiana's newest citizens to vote. Through their efforts, nearly 1,050 newly naturalized citizens were registered to vote in 2009.
